Lane Last, a passionate educator and artist, 59, passed away peacefully at his home in Martin, Tennessee, on October 19, 2024.
Born on October 21, 1964, in Sterling, Illinois, Lane’s family later moved to Freeport, Illinois, where he was active in high school sports, music, and art. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts. After teaching briefly at Freeport’s Highland Community College, he moved to Ladysmith, Wisconsin, where he taught at Mount Scenario College. Lane spent the remaining 25 years of his career teaching art at the University of Tennessee at Martin, inspiring countless students with his creativity and commitment to the arts. His influence in the art community and dedication to his students will be remembered and cherished by many.
Lane was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, colleague, and friend. He is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Robin Last (nee Frey); his children, Jacob (Brianna) and Kiran; his parents, Robert and Audrey; his sister, Corrine Wallace; and his cherished grandchildren, Jamie and Vincent.
Memorial events will be held in Freeport, Illinois, on November 2nd at the Eagles Club, followed by a private event on Sunday in Madison, Wisconsin. Lane’s wish was that local art programs be financially supported, especially those that inspire young people to engage with art. Donations to your local schools for art supplies would be appreciated in memory of Lane Last, reflecting his values and passion for art education.
