Martha “Smokey” McMahan, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024 in Knoxville, TN, with family by her side.
Born in and a resident of Maggie Valley her entire life until June of 2024, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Sutton and Jimmie White Sutton; in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill McMahan, her daughter, Angie, her sister, Betty Sutton Smith, and her brothers, Kyle, Vincent, Billy, and Thomas Sutton.
Smokey was a hairdresser for 67 years and was still cutting and curling hair until she finally put her scissors down at age 86.
She was fiercely devoted to her family as mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, Christ-like mentor, prayer warrior, and dear friend. She was constantly seeking ways to bless her family and friends through her endless hours of loving support and prayer. A member of Maggie First Baptist Church for 80 years, she used to tell of her days as a young girl walking to church with her cousin, Grace, when the church was still named Mt. Olivet Baptist. A member of the choir, active in so many ministries, and key to so many blessings and prayers being answered for the church over the years, she graciously gave of her time, finances, and wisdom and poured herself into anything and everyone she touched.
She is survived by her son, Tim McMahan and his wife Lisa Johnson McMahan and five grandchildren, Jonah McMahan (Melina), Abram McMahan, Rachel Daugherty (Trey), Jared Shuler (Krystal), and Joshua Shuler (Sydney); and four great grandchildren.
